Leverage Your Strengths or Conquer Your Weaknesses?

Leverage Your Strengths or Conquer Your Weaknesses?

As a business owner, it is crucial to have a complete understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing where you excel and where you may fall short can help you make decisions, improve your leadership approach and help you grow your business effectively.

Let’s explore.

Identify Your Strengths

Before diving into your weaknesses, it's important to celebrate your strengths. Just like when you are needing to talk to a staff member about their shortcomings, start with what they are doing well!

Identify your strengths

These are the abilities that likely motivated you to start your business in the first place. Reflect on your previous roles and achievements, and list at least 10 strengths you possess.

Examples may include:

  • Your craft
  • Product development
  • Marketing
  • Selling
  • Financials
  • Connecting people
  • Listening
  • Strategy

Once you have a list of your strengths, pin them to your wall and remind yourself daily of what is unique to you.

Acknowledge Your Weaknesses

To become stronger you must first face your weakness.

Know your weaknesses

No one is perfect, and it's vital to recognise where you may need improvement, to be honest with yourself about what your shortfalls are. Start by reflecting on your past experiences, paying close attention to situations where you faced challenges or struggled to achieve your goals.

When you think back to those moments, what specifically was the issue? Was it your approach? Your communication? Or perhaps your stress levels?

List at least 10 weaknesses or areas for growth.

This is not about giving yourself a hard time. This is about saying to yourself;

“Hey Superstar, I love the way you {insert your strengths} buuut, you may need to make a few adjustments here {insert your weaknesses}"

Get Curious About Your Strengths & Weaknesses

Review your lists of strengths and weaknesses with a fresh perspective, as if they belonged to a friend's business. What do you notice?

  • Determine if there are any underlying issues contributing to your weaknesses. Are they due to lack of knowledge, skills, or resources?
  • How do they affect your business?
  • Brainstorm possible ways to overcome your weaknesses
  • Brainstorm possible ways to amplify your strengths

Get curious

The more you can be honest with yourself about all parts of yourself, the quicker you can leverage your strengths AND conquer your weaknesses.

Shift your perception and combine Strengths and Weaknesses

What if your strengths could help you unlock and move your weaknesses?

They can.

  • If you enjoy talking to people but dislike selling, focus on the communication aspect of selling to enhance your skills.
